The Chooser Examplar #8 : Internet Plays Bigger Role in Life Decisions
    Link

Many of you will be familiar with The Futures Lab's recasting of the future consumer as The Chooser. Self Responsibility is a key organizing idea when is comes to framing the chooser.

Often (but not exclusively) enabled by access to information via technologies such as the Internet, three key factors that characterize this notion of Self Responsibility are:

    1. Self agency
    2. Self customization
    3. Self organization

And so, with these things in mind, this report from Reuters provides confirmation of this important emerging trend - The Chooser.

The report, cites a recent survey conducted by the Pew Internet and American Life Project which describes how nearly half of U.S. users of the Internet went online for help with major life decisions such as finding a college for their child or looking for a new place to live.

An estimated 21 million Americans turned to the Internet when seeking more training for a career, while 17 million used it to choose a school for a family member or to help another person with a major illness, the Pew Internet group said.

Some 16 million Americans used the Internet when buying a car or making a major investment or financial decision, it said. An estimated 10 million Americans used the Internet when looking for a new place to live; 8 million when changing jobs; and 7 million when dealing with their own major illness or health condition, the survey said.

    Link

    via Tech Review

A robotic elbow brace that senses the intention of its user and aids movement should soon be available to help stroke survivors perform everyday tasks, such as turning off light switches. What's more, early trials suggest the device acts as a therapeutic aid, markedly improving a patient's ability to move even without the device.

The device, which should be available by the end of this year or the beginning of 2007, will retail for approximately US$6,000. Next steps for the brace will include adapting the device for aiding movement of the wrist and hand, in addition to the elbow.
